There are two things you need to know about this book:
- It is written from the point of view of death
- It will blow your mind
The story is set in Nazi Germany where Liesel, the main character of this novel, has been adopted by Germans Hans Hubermann, and his wife, Rosa. Nothing is as simple as it seems however, because the Hubermann household have a secret, they’re hiding a Jew.
To say this book is narrated by death seems very extreme and, considering the subject, quite inappropriate. Author Markus Zusak doesn’t over use the fact that death narrates it and a lot of the time I couldn’t tell that the narrator was death.
The novel is brilliantly written with glimpses of what is yet to come – sometimes misleading, but at other times, every word soon rings true.
A few of my favourite characters, besides the book thief herself (Liesel), were Rudy, Liesel’s best friend, Ilsa Hermann, the mayors wife, and Rosa Hubermann.
This book was one of the best books I have ever read and in the end brought me to tears.
I have never seen the film but am so glad that I read the book before I saw it!
